About the event

Join us for an in-depth conversation with director Tig Terera as he talks about his journey to becoming the creator, writer and director of the 2024 SBS series Swift Street starring Tanzyn Crawford and Cliff Curtis, and Produced by Magpie Pictures.

In this session, Tig reflects on breaking into the television industry with this energetic (and very bingeable!) family crime drama. As an aspiring filmmaker, Zimbabwe-born Australia-raised Terera worked as a bartender and would save up his pennies to make short films with his friends. He didn’t have many people in the industry he could look up to - but now, after his debut series Swift Street, he’s becoming the role model to others that he never had.

He’ll tell us about the many learnings he gained as both a writer and a director on the project - including his collaboration with the series’ creative team, cast and crew. We’ll hear about his hands-on approach to skills development, his insights into how to authentically reflect community through storytelling, and his advice for early career storytellers.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s most talented new screen creatives.

TIG TERERA'S BIO:

Tig Terera is a writer and director who was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Australia. His debut TV series, SWIFT STREET, which he created, wrote and directed (eps 1-4), was funded by SBS and Magpie Pictures and has global entertainment company Fifth Season handling international distribution. A crime drama, SWIFT STREET follows Elsie, who teams up with her old-school hustler father, Robert, in order to save him from a merciless crime boss and free him from debt. The series recently premiered internationally in competition at Canneseries after being selected as one of only eight global entries in the short-form category.

No stranger to the global stage, Tig’s short drama, TINASHÉ, won a Special Mention award at the 2022 Berlinale in the Generation section, and premiered locally as a finalist for Best Live Action Australian Short at Sydney Film Festival 2021. With his ear to the streets and his finger on the pulse of Melbourne culture, Tig’s work regularly feature bold individuals within minorities. He has worked on music videos, TVC’s and film projects in London, Paris and Singapore, and is the creator of several short films, including CHENGE, SOLIBET, and CHARLOTTE.
