Creating Unforgettable Characters
A one-day workshop with Author and Screenwriter, Amal Awad
Time & Location
06 Aug 2023, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Zoom (Online)
About the event
Some writers deliver a masterpiece that was inspired by a single moment or a chance conversation they overheard. Others see a character and follow them. Sometimes, you do both. In this workshop, Amal Awad discusses the importance of authentic characters, and how they are the ultimate storytellers in your work, whether you are writing for performance or text. This two-hour intensive will cover:
- Dialogue and character voices
- Other character essentials - Status, behaviours, relationships, and more
- Studies of memorable characters from film and television
- Exercises to develop your characters
This intensive class is suitable for any level of storyteller who is interested in better understanding the significance of developing and writing from character.
A writer, director, and performer, Amal interned with the drama development team at Fremantle Australia in 2022. She was next selected to be a director's attachment with Ana Kokkinos for Ten Pound Poms (BBC/Stan). In 2019, she was selected to attend Screen Australia's Developing the Developer workshop and was part of the writing team for Sex in the West, a recipient of Screen Australia's Gender Matters Brilliant Stories funding. Amal has participated in numerous writers' rooms, including with Porchlight, Fremantle, Wooden Horse, CJZ and more. She is currently in early development on her own project Over My Dead Body . She also wrote for Iain Crittenden's online comedy Plausible Deniability. In 2013, Amal wrote and directed the short film The Doorknock Appeal, which screened at Colourfest. Amal is the author of seven books, both fiction and non-fiction. Her eighth book, a novel titled Bitter & Sweet, is due for release in August 2023.
